How Much Do Custom Blinds Cost In Toronto? What Actually Drives The Price

By Covera Shades9 min read

The Short Answer

The price of custom blinds in Toronto is set by six things: the number and size of the windows, the type of shade, the fabric grade, manual or motorized operation, the cassette or fascia finish, and installation. There is no honest flat rate per window, which is why we measure first and quote after. The consultation and the written proposal are free, the proposal is the final price, and this season every order is $500 off.

Key Takeaways

  • Width and drop set the base price. A 100 inch living room wall costs more than a 30 inch bathroom window, and it should.
  • Roller is usually the least expensive shade, then zebra and cellular, then roman, then made to measure curtains.
  • Motorization is the single largest add. It is worth it on tall, wide or numerous windows and rarely worth it on a small one.
  • The big box number is not the installed number. Measuring, brackets, fascia, disposal and labour are all inside our proposal.

You want a number. Everyone does, and every website that gives you one is either guessing or planning to change it after the visit. Here is the honest version: what moves the price, where the money goes, and how to know a quote is real before you sign it.

The six things that set the price of custom blinds

  1. Size of each opening. Fabric is sold by the square foot and hardware by the width. A floor to ceiling wall of glass is a different job from a powder room window.
  2. Type of shade. As a rule of thumb from least to most: roller, zebra and cellular, roman, then curtains on a track.
  3. Fabric grade. A basic 3% screen and a designer textured blackout are not the same cloth. We show you both and tell you when the upgrade is worth it and when it is not.
  4. Operation. Cordless spring, continuous chain or motor. Motors add the most, then the wall switch, hub and app that make them useful.
  5. Finish. Open roll, square cassette or curved fascia. The fascia hides the roll and finishes the top of the window; it costs more and on a living room wall it is worth every dollar.
  6. Installation conditions. Concrete headers, tall ladders, a building that needs a certificate of insurance and a booked service elevator. Ours are included. Ask whether theirs are.

What the cheap quote leaves out

A quote from a big box or an online configurator is the price of a box. It is not the price of finished windows. The things that get added later, or left for you to solve, are usually these:

  • Measuring, which you did yourself, which is why the shade is a quarter inch narrow and there is a stripe of light down the jamb.
  • Brackets and fascia beyond the basic clip.
  • Installation into a concrete condo header, which most handymen will not touch.
  • Removal and disposal of the builder blinds.
  • A remake when the shade is wrong, which on a stock size means buying it twice.

Our proposal includes all of it. We have never issued an invoice larger than the proposal it came from, in more than a thousand residences. If that sounds like a small thing, ask anyone who has renovated a condo.

Where it is worth spending and where it is not

Spend on the windows you live in front of

The living room wall of glass is the reason you bought the place. That is where the fascia, the better fabric and, if the wall is wide, the motor belong. Every guest will look at it and you will operate it every day.

Save on the windows nobody sees

A bathroom or a laundry window wants a plain roller on an open roll. It does not need a motor and it does not need a designer fabric. We will tell you this at the consultation, because a proposal padded with things you do not need is how a company loses the referral.

Motorize where it changes how you live

Tall windows, runs of five or more, a bedroom you want to open with the alarm. That is where a motor earns its price. One small window over the sink is not. See our full piece on whether motorized blinds are worth it.

Why we will not put a price list on this page

Because we would have to make it up. Two condos on the same floor of the same building in Mississauga can differ by thirty percent once you account for a bay, a sliding door and a motor. A price list would be wrong for one of them, and the company that quotes low from a list makes it up in the invoice. We would rather spend an hour at your windows and put the real figure in writing.

What you get for the money that you do not get elsewhere

  • Every opening measured at three heights and three widths, cut to the narrowest.
  • Installed by the person who measured, not a subcontractor who has never seen the room.
  • Fully insured, WSIB covered, and the certificate of insurance filed with your property manager by us.
  • Old blinds removed, packaging taken away, every shade cycled and levelled before we leave.
  • Five years of warranty with the labour included. If it is our measure or our making, we remake it.

“19 windows over two floors. Every single one fits like it was poured in. Invoice matched the quote. Honestly can't think of anything to complain about.”

Questions People Ask

Frequently Asked

  • How much do custom blinds cost per window in Toronto?

It depends on the size, the shade type, the fabric, the finish and whether it is motorized. We quote after measuring so the number is real. The consultation and proposal are free and the proposal is the final price.

  • Is the consultation really free?

Yes. A consultant visits, measures every window, shows you samples and leaves you with a written proposal within 48 hours. There is no fee and no obligation.

  • Are custom blinds worth the cost over big box blinds?

Custom blinds fit the opening exactly, are installed properly into condo concrete, and are covered by a warranty that includes labour. Big box blinds are cheaper on the shelf and more expensive once you count the light gaps, the failed self install and the replacement.

  • Do you offer any discounts?

This season every order is $500 off. The offer is applied on the proposal, so you see the full price and the reduction side by side.
